A Duluth family — seven decades on the same street.

From the port city to a legacy of lasting care.

In 1948, Dougherty Funeral Home opened its doors at 600 East Second Street in Duluth — a port city shaped by iron ore, Scandinavian settlers, and the vast grey horizon of Lake Superior. The family understood what this community needed: not a national brand, not a franchise, but a neighbour who would answer the phone at any hour and carry every name with reverence.

Duluth has changed enormously since those post-war years. The harbour has quieted and reinvented itself. Entire neighbourhoods have been built and rebuilt. Through all of it, Dougherty has remained on East Second Street — the same building, the same dedication, serving Duluth families across multiple generations of the same household.

Today that legacy continues. The same values that guided the home's founding — dignity, transparency, and unhurried care — are the ones that greet every family who walks through the door.

Seventy years of Duluth names.

The records of Dougherty Funeral Home mirror the city it has served — the Halvorsens and Bergstroms of the Scandinavian East End, the O'Briens and Dolans of the West, the ironworkers and stevedores who built this port. These are Duluth names, carried in Duluth families across generations.

More than seven decades later, those same family lines still call us. The names have grown, the city has changed, but the commitment has never wavered.

Plate · 05 · Digital Services

Duluth families scattered across the country.
Distance shouldn't keep them apart.

Many Duluth families have children and grandchildren who have moved elsewhere — to the Twin Cities, to the coasts, to other countries. When someone passes, Dougherty's digital services keep every family member connected, from any distance.

Feature · 01

Livestream the service

We broadcast services live so that family members who are travelling, elderly, or simply too far to make the journey can still be fully present. A private link, shared only with those you choose.

Feature · 02

Online condolence wall

Leave a message, a memory, or a photograph on the family's memorial page. Condolences submitted online are gathered and printed for the family — a keepsake of everyone who cared enough to write.

Feature · 03

Pre‑plan from anywhere

You don't need to be in Duluth to pre-plan. Our pre-need coordinator handles consultations by phone or video. Adult children who have moved away can plan ahead for a loved one still living on the North Shore — from wherever they call home.

for more than seventy years.
That is not a business. It is a calling."
